Dolores Hidalgo and Guanajuato On August 15, Instituto Allende Tours leads a day-long field trip to Dolores Hidalgo and Guanajuato. Dolores Hidalgo, a center for Talavera ceramics, is where Miguel Hidalgo uttered El Grito on September 15, 1810, his famous cry for freedom.

Later the tour heads to Guanajuato, a charming capital city with great cultural traditions and home of the University of Guanajuato. Diego Rivera’s home is on the bill, along with an easy walking tour of Plazas de la Paz, the main Jardín and other sites.

Bernal and Querétaro On August 22, Instituto Allende’s weekly field trip heads to the quaint village of Bernal and then to the city of Querétaro. Bernal boasts a significant landmark in a towering boulder that looms over the village.

Local weavers produce wool blankets, sweaters, wall hangings, shawls, vests, rugs and pillowcases. The town also is renowned for semiprecious stones. Afterwards it’s off to nearby Querétaro, with stops at the famous Aqueduct, the Cementerio de los Hombres Illustres, the Plaza de Armas and the city’s centerpiece, the Villa del Villar del Aquila Fountain. Also on the schedule are Queretaro’s popular outdoor market, a walking tour through colonial streets, a visit to the Hill of the Bells, the Benito Juárez Monument and the Chapel of Archduke Maximilian.

Bilingual guides lead the all-inclusive Instituto Allende tours. Reservations are a must and fees must be paid in advance. For more information, visit Ancha de San Antonio 20, or call 152-0226.

A free lecture at Instituto each Wednesday at 4pm previews upcoming trips.
