Guanajuato mummies on tour

Some of the Guanajuato mummies are scheduled to make their debut abroad in Detroit at the Science Center this October. Later they travel to Denver, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Chicago and Los Angeles. The mummies are corpses interred in the Guanajuato municipal cemetery, whose mineral-rich soil retarded decay, discovered when coffins were dug up to make room for the more recently departed. The mummy museum is a major tourist attraction for the city.

Swimming with sharks—and surviving

The second-largest barrier reef in the world lies off Cancún and Puerto Morelos, making a hands-on encounter with the marine world easier. Whale sharks are gentle sea giants who live on plankton and shun large prey. They can be 50 feet long and weigh 10 tons, and are not whales but the biggest of all fish. The trip out and back to Contoy and Holbox with guides takes a day and the only risk is seasickness.

Odyssey takes luxury cruising to a new level

Despite recession and US$16,000 fares, the inaugural 14-day sailing onboard the new Seabourn Odyssey was sold out. It will spend its maiden season in the Mediterranean before relocating to the Caribbean. A 108-day first world cruise departs January 5, 2010, with fares at $1,000 per day.
