Step on the stage
By Murray Kamelhar

Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots) is a beautifully written play by the poet-playwright Friedrich Schiller, masterfully translated by Peter Oswald. It tells the story of a major event in 16th century English history.

One might justify ignoring this play since it is a three-and-a-half-hour-long production and deals with English history. How many in our audience can take that?

However, successfully stubborn Actors Lab is responding to these concerns by editing, thus leaving two hours on the cutting room floor.

Actors Lab likes to put on productions that are entertaining and not tedious, so we will deemphasize the history and focus on the conflicts between and within the personalities, ambitions and beliefs of the characters within the play.

In Mary Stuart, among other issues, the conflict with Catholicism that exists in England to this day is presented.

The play needs 12 players; three women, nine men, all adults.

The Biblioteca’s Teatro Santa Ana is reserved for the week of February 8. We will perform that week if we are prepared to offer a professional performance.

With strong professional direction, you will be prepared. So come to the audition at Teatro Santa Ana, or call Murray K. at 152-4942.
