Cruzando la línea (Crossing the line) is a keen and funny play about a complicated subject: the illegal immigration of Mexicans to the United States. The idea came from the young dramatist, actor and theater director, Sanmiguelense Carlos Díaz. He wanted to explore a situation that affects all of us living on both sides of the border.
Supported by the talented actors Paulina Kleen and Etienne Sanchez, he founded a new independent theater group that intends to offer original plays. They are trying to contribute to the building of a theater culture in San Miguel.
Cruzando la línea is the first play staged by the group. It´s about three characters who meet by chance at the border: José, a young Mexican who is trying to get into the US; Tom, a border patrol officer; and Sheryl, an enigmatic and charming woman who has a lot in common with both men. The lives of these three characters entangle to show us that, after all, we human beings are not so different from each other as we thought. It doesn’t matter if we speak English, Spanish or Japanese, or if we have more or less money. As one of the characters in the play says, “To be born over here or over there is a simple accident.”
The theater group also presents three short monologues about love, hate and disillusionment. The play and the monologues are in Spanish.
