There is a grand theater event in San Miguel at the moment, and those of us who have seen it are filled with enthusiasm for the project. Juana de Arco (Vision a traves del fuego), a monologue in Spanish interpreted by Arleta Jeziorska, was written and directed by John Morrow, with original music by Peter Ross.
Jeziorska is one of those amazing actors who with gesture, voice and uncanny intuitive powers brings work alive. She is a communicator with a gift for translating Morrow’s terrific script into an evening of serious enchantment, under the wonderful night sky at the little capilla off Obraje just down from Calzada de La Luz.
Morrow directs with a deft touch, and the work lives as testimony to Joan of Arc’s dramatic story but also as a paean to the human spirit, in all its contradiction and power. The piece is simply a wonder.
John and others in the theater community are planning a company and school in San Miguel’s future, and if this production is any sign of what’s to come, we can look forward to a grand addition to the cultural life of our good city.
