This coming week the San Miguel Playreaders proudly present two Edward Albee plays: The American Dream and The Sandbox. These short, one-act plays, written in 1959 and 1960, respectively, helped establish the American theater of the absurd. Nevertheless, across more than half a century they still speak to concerns of our culture today. Although they were conceived as separate works, both plays use virtually the same set of characters. The generic parents, Mommy and Daddy, are trapped in lives of wealth and trivial materialism. The powerful character of Grandma (who expects Mommy and Daddy to summon the Van Man at any moment and cart her off to an old folks home to die) is bluntly honest-and just a little devious! Mrs. Barker is the strange social worker who seems to be, among other things, in perpetual charge of adoption placements, one of which is the gorgeous Young Man with his own peculiar version of past events. Presenting both plays in the same evening should make for an interesting evening of serious and absurd comedy. The cast features Lola Smith, Britt Zaist, Henry Vermillion, Stan Gray and Erwit Reichert. Music is played by Elizabeth Stone, and lights and sound are managed by Eli Nadel. Doors open at 7pm.
