Student actors Melissa Lawrence, Kirby Feagan and Morgan Hardcastle rehearse for their upcoming performance of Macbeth

The path to performing Macbeth began when the students at Colegio Atabal's Secondaria were trying to solve a New York Times crossword puzzle as part of their vocabulary study. One of the clues was: "Beware the _____ of March." When nobody knew the answer, instructor Jody Feagan had the kids investigate the word "ides." That led to the study of Julius Caesar, from which the famous line originated. And then the class read Hamlet, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The students voted to perform Macbeth because of the evil deception of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, the crazy witches with their eye of newt and baboon blood, and the ghosts and spirits. Students also couldn't pass up the sword fights. Plus, in Macbeth, students learned, three people get to die!

Under the direction of Jody Feagan, adaptations were made to the play. Because most of the students are girls, Lenox became Lady Lenox, played by sixth grader Melissa Lawrence. Macbeth is played by Morgan Hardcastle, and Lady Macbeth is interpreted by Kirby Feagan. The 11 student-actors are making their own costumes and props and designing their own set.

Tickets are available at the door for both performances.

Auditions to tread the boards

Isaac Toporek and Alan Jordan, the producer and director of Blown Sideways Through Life, a very successful production starring Kirsten Dehner, will be holding auditions for actors and actresses for upcoming productions. English-speaking, bilingual and Spanish-speaking actors are welcome.

Auditions will consist of a one-minute monologue or assigned improvisations and an informal interview. They hope to have productions running for at least one month following several weeks of rehearsal. Rehearsals will accommodate peoples' schedules as much as possible, but a firm commitment to all performances is essential. Since upcoming productions are still being decided on, these auditions are general in nature and are not for specific roles.

All actors and technical artists are compensated in the productions. Call Isaac Toporek for an appointment and the audition address at 154-8701.

The cast includes Nancy Kandal and Rudy Hornish as the married couple, Sharon Franz as their daughter, Henry Vermillion as her old boyfriend, and Tom King and Patrick Sargent as her new boyfriend and his son.
