Moonlit mesas and lost loves
 |
 |
Josie Kuhn, international recording artist and singer/songwriter returns to San Miguel for a show at Cerveza de San Miguel.
Josie has been called “One of the leading women in the Americana movement” and “A female Marty Robbins.” A Nashville Scene critic described her as “a cross between Patsy Cline and Buffy St. Marie (if you can imagine that).”
|
Josie hails from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the inspiration for many of her songs comes from. She has songs about moonlit mesas, coyotes, cantinas, lost love and newfound love.
Josie also spent years as president of HONAR – Helping Our Native American Relatives. The nonprofit group collects donations from warm clothing to furniture to building supplies (including a kitchen sink), all personally delivered to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, and distributed to the elders in need. Her songs, “We’re Still Here” and “Here on the Res” reflect her experiences with the people there.
Josie has traveled and toured the US, Europe, Great Britain, Central and South America, gaining rave reviews and building a vast fan base. She has five CDs to her credit. “Walks With Lions” was voted Best Tex-Mex CD, and “La Luna Loca” was named Best CD of the Year in Maverick magazine (GB). Josie was also nominated as Best Country Singer at the NYC Music Awards.
Among her admirers are Lucinda Williams, Tanya Tucker, Billy Joe Shaver, Emmy Lou Harris, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, Don Everly and the late, but great Townes Van Zandt, and Rick Danko of The Band, who Josie toured and wrote with for years.
Onstage, Josie has been revered as more of a tiger than a pussycat. Her smoky vocals add dimension to her guitar playing skills. Whether she is playing a beautiful flamenco-based song, funky Delta style blues or a Creedence rocker, Josie grabs the audience with no holds barred and goes for broke. Her lyrics will make you think, laugh, cry or smile, and her melodies will stay with you long after the curtain has closed.

Divas rock out

The “Divas of San Miguel,” Lili Barreto and Sabrina Surving, will surprise you this Halloween with their excellent personifications of recognized rock stars like Janis Joplin, Chrissie Hynde, Blondie, Pat Benatar and more. |
Sabrina and Lili will sing the songs that gave unforgettable fame to these rock divas. It will be a musical trip from the sixties to the present.
Lili Barreto has participated in some of the best musical plays in Mexico City, working in famous Broadway shows like Chorus Line, Fiddler on the Roof and Rocky Horror Picture Show. She was part of a group called Maquina del Tiempo and Ruido Rosa, produced by Luis de Llano and Televisa, recording two discs called Volver al Pasado and Respírame, respectively. She also recorded a CD called The New Era with the participation of Mexican rock bands Maná and Ritmo Peligroso. Lili came to San Miguel two years ago and decided to share her knowledge as a professional singer, creating a recording studio and a singer’s workshop, where she has found excellent and talented students like Sabrina Surving.
Many of you already know “Diva” Sabrina, owner of the 7th Heaven boutique. Sabrina has lived in San Miguel for 20 years. She was the bold and sexy Miss February in the calendar Las Dueñas 2009. One night Lili heard Sabrina singing at La Capilla and was drawn to Sabrina’s sexy low voice and contagious passion for singing. That night began this new adventure, “Divas of San Miguel”.
Don't miss out; it will be a night to remember. If you’re out of ideas for what to do this Halloween, just pull out that old tie-dye t-shirt, let your hair down, and come join the fun. Rock on San Miguel!
