Jazz Cats bring passion

San Miguel Jazz Cats, the city’s resident jazz band, have captivated jazz lovers for well over a decade in the intimate setting of their weekly gig at steak house Tío Lucas, annual concerts at the Jazz and Blues festival, as well as special performances.

In the musical memory of San Miguel, the Jazz Cats hold a place beyond simple nostalgia. Their collaborations with the likes of Dave Pike, Bob Sheppard, Lila Downs, Francisco Mela, Herrera Magicians and John Ronstadt have become part of our history and part of the intimate circle of friends who call San Miguel their second home.

Ken Basman, Antonio Losoya and Victor Monterrubio are a trio of passionate musicians—that passion is seen as they immerse themselves intensely in their music and it is experienced by the audience as they are swept into the musical performance.

Antonio Losoya commented to me about a peculiar phenomenon occurring in Jazz festivals throughout Mexico; they are being created and managed by musicians—in the Riviera Maya, Puebla, Chiapas, Los Cabos, Jalapa and here in San Miguel de Allende. A wave of musicians of near titanic proportions has swept across the country, bringing talented professionals beyond the confines of the capital of Mexico City and infusing jazz and blues festivals in most major cities with new and exciting energy.

JAZZ (Swing Fever).jpg
Keeping swing alive

This band has specialized in playing thirties and forties jazz since 1978. The band has traveled and recorded with famous musicians, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, the trumpet player Clark Terry, the clarinetist Buddy De Franco and Terry Gibbs.

As Now Jazz said, the “Swing Fever keeps that music alive without being a museum piece.” Created and consolidated in the San Francisco Bay area, Swing Fever has persisted in its own style. They’ve played at the Jazz Festival in Monterrey, as well as the classic jazz festivals of San Francisco, San José, Sacramento and Los Angeles. In 1990, they were recognized by the Advice for Arts of California; since then they haven’t stopped playing and have already 400 concerts just in California. Rhythmical, romantic, torrid and ingenious… that’s the music of Swing Fever.

Their special guest is Denise Perrier, one of the most important Jazz & Blues singers in San Francisco. With 30 years of professional trajectory she has participated in the most important Festivals at Europe, Asia and the United States.
