Music is in the air this spring, and San Miguel might well brag about the number of creative musicians contributing to its fertile live music scene, among whom the guitar duo of Frances Zelenka and Jack Stillwater stands out for their thoughtful arrangements of popular material and their original compositions.

Jack and Frances last performed at the Santa Ana in September, presenting a sold-out performance of their arrangements of classic Mexican melodies.

This concert is a mix of their original material and their most popular arrangements, including their often-requested versions of “Blackbird,” “El Toro Enamorado de la Luna” and other favorites.

Proceeds from the concert benefit the Art in the Park program. Art in the Park, held weekly in the Parque Juarez, was started in 2005 as a community-based public art program with the support of the Direción de Ecologia and continues with the support of the Direción de Education y Cultura. The purpose of the program is to give the children of San Miguel access to painting, and it has reached over a thousand children to date.

Artist Nina Wisniewski, founder of the program, began painting at the age of three and enjoyed the unconditional support of her family in developing her creative process. Now she feels that it is her turn to give the children of San Miguel de Allende the same opportunity to experience art and painting early in life.

She says, “These children paint without hesitation, enjoying the purity of simply painting, making their personal marks on paper and freeing their creative spirits with color, movement and found imagery.”

Jack and Frances are pleased to help support Art in the Park with their benefit performance at the Teatro Santa Ana. Tickets are available from the tienda in the Biblioteca.
