For natural geographic reasons, the US and Mexico have had a complex relationship, marked by two groups of people—the powerful and the ordinary. In this interaction, the ordinary sometimes prevailed, and the arrogance or distrust of others in circles of political, economic and military power have promoted ethnocentrism, prejudice, xenophobia and intolerance among the common people.

Many circumstances arise from the lack of knowledge and understanding of our different evolutionary processes, such as family and neighborhood. The talk mixes cultural background with high-power economics, local identity with increased global awareness, the intuitive with local customs and fact-based formal logic with individualism.

Today in San Miguel, we can see opportunities to increase cooperation between citizens of both countries through dialogue and growth in mutual understanding. Central to mutual understanding is a review of the first 100 years of the history of Mexico as a sovereign state (1821–1920), where the relationship with the US, for good and evil, has been crucial and vital.

I address these issues with the aim of bringing the understanding of this phenomenon to foreign residents in San Miguel.
