Accelerating degradation
By Arturo Tirado Morales

According to some environmentalist Europeans, participants in the German technical assistance project, three major environmental challenges occur in cities and communities with the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.

The population explosion, or overpopulation of humans, is linked to population dynamics—population structure, fertility, mortality, migration and marginalization—of each country, state and county.

Overexploitation of natural resources—mainly of water, land, energy, biodiversity and food—is driven mainly by consumerism that is unreasonable or unreflective. Environmental pollution is of human origin, in all its forms.

In the municipalities of the Upper River Laja region, these environmental challenges are present and, in general, almost totally neglected. The effects are seen in the accelerating and increasing environmental degradation of the region. Over 85 percent of the area demonstrates some kind of erosion, the spread of desertification and increased salinity in the soil, and depletion of groundwater or aquifer with an increase in their dissolved salts.
