Spiritual music for the soul is the title of photo-documentary exhibition on a legendary early 20th century folk healer J.J. Fidencio S.Constantino, better known as El Niño Fidencio. This event includes a discussion on the healer, photographs and recordings of the music that was so much a part of the remarkable healings that El Niño performed.

El Niño Fidencio, who died in 1938, is remembered as a childlike, happy man. Indeed, for the hoards of sick and injured people who came to see him, he often prescribed laughter, food, and merriment. When anyone gave him gifts—and the President of Mexico seemed to, with great frequency—El Niño used the occasion to share, thus lightening the otherwise gloomy existence of many of the pilgrims. There are stories that say that El Niño Fidencio hired musicians so that everyone—even arthritics and cripples—might dance; and everyone, it is said, did just that.

Legend tells that when the first radios came to Espinazo he became fascinated with the new technology and told his followers that when he died, his spirit would return to one of those little boxes. And so every year hundreds of “cajitas”, (as the many men and women who continue to heal in his name are called) parade through the town. Speaking in the voice of a child they claim to be possessed by the spirit of Niño Fidencio and heal the onlookers. Musicians accompany the healers with North Mexican music inspiring all participants to lively dancing. Prayers, chants and songs in honor of el Niño Fidencio complete the festive celebration which for those who seek relief to their pain represents spiritual music for the Soul.
