The Center for Global Justice ends a very successful Snowbird Symposium with a panel examining globalization today. Three members of the Center-Betsy Bowman, Arturo Yarish and Cliff DuRand-will share their insights into the profound global changes we have seen and consider the way beyond what is now an increasingly criticized neoliberal globalization. The advocates of free trade, privatization and minimal government control had promised that the market would bring prosperity to all-and even ameliorate the misery of the poor. A rising tide will lift all boats, we were told. However, the reality is that the yachts have risen while the rowboats are sinking. The corporate-led glo- balization of the past three decades has resulted in a growing gap between rich and poor, both within nations and between the countries of the global North and South. At the same time, the capacity of nations to democratically promote the common good of their peoples has been weakened. In many parts of the global South, particularly in Latin America, the claims of existing globalization are being questioned. Alternative approaches to development are being sought in countries such as Venezuela, Argentina and Bolivia. The peoples of the South are learning important lessons from their experience. What lessons can those of us from the North learn from these times?
