CASA to open schools for midwives in Guatemala
By Jesús Ibarra

CASA (Center for Adolescents of San Miguel A.C.), a nonprofit organization that supports mainly adolescents and single mothers, has a medical clinic that specializes in gynecology and obstetrics and a school for professional midwives.

Women from states such as Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato attend this school—the only institution in the country that grants a professional certificate to its students. Now, CASA is expanding its midwifery school to Guatemala, since “that country has almost the same mortality rate for women who die during childbirth as Mexico,” said Maricruz Coronado, a professional midwife and director of CASA.

A dance of conquest and faith
By Jesús Ibarra

More than one hundred dancers dressed in pre-Hispanic costumes fill the Jardin today, March 6, to honor one of the city’s most venerated religious figures—El Señor de la Conquista (Our Lord of the Conquest). San Miguel’s abandoned chapels

They are indeed. More than 300 churches and chapels are in the municipio of San Miguel and about one-fourth are abandoned or in ruins. They are scattered around the nearby countryside, although some are within walking distance of the Jardín. Many are heartbreakingly beautiful.

Netherlands-born photographer and writer Robert de Gast, author of nine books, including, most recently, Behind the Doors of San Miguel, delivers a slide show and talk he calls “The Romance of Ruins: San Miguel’s Abandoned Chapels.”
