A bull market: independence without the Sanmiguelada

The Sanmiguelada, our city’s version of Pamplona’s famous bull run, was one of San Miguel’s prime tourist draws for 35 years until it was cancelled by local authorities.

In 2006, an unexpectedly large number of revelers, 40,000, overwhelmed the city’s resources. The crowds, mostly young adults, held a virtual bacchanal in the streets, drinking, damaging property and behaving outrageously.
