Holy Cross festival in Valle de Maíz mixes the sacred and profane

“Nothing is for sale; everything is free at the celebration of the Holy Cross in Valle del Maíz. This festival, like others in nearby communities, is a sacred space where people thank God and share all they have,” said Leopoldo Estrada Buenrrostro, better known as “Don Polo,” a resident of Valle del Maíz who is of Chichimeca ancestry.
