Unique tradition of altars ushers in Holy Week

Holy Week officially begins with the celebration of Viernes de Dolores (Friday of our Lady of Sorrows). In a tradition unique to San Miguel de Allende, doors and windows are decorated with altars strewn with fragrant herbs and flowers. 

Although the day is dedicated to the sorrow of Mary, generosity and warmth pervade the evening, and visitors to the altars are offered fruit drinks and ice cream.
