The March 25 opening of Starbucks in San Miguel de Allende has caused controversy in the community.

Selling coffee is a means of livelihood for many San Miguel families who own coffee shops around the Jardín or on adjacent streets. Although Starbucks has retained the colonial architecture of its new store, for many a US-based business with an English name flies in the face of tradition, the local economy and the essence of a provincial city such as San Miguel.

Its third annual exhibition is April 7–30, in the Museo del Ayuntamiento, located across from the Jardín. The 25 participants include expatriate artists living in San Miguel and distinguished guests. |
