Editor,

It is really a pity to see that, while most of our well-appreciated expat community, living in San Miguel de Allende, spends its time working in favor of the poorest communities and helping and supporting in social projects, a small minority of four persons insist on affecting thousands of people, mostly children and young students, since they have devoted themselves to hamper the performance of a much needed work. I’m referring to the bridge that will link Colonia Guadalupe with Fraccionamiento Manjarrez de Mexiquito, which is a passing area toward the schools and neighborhoods, which are currently isolated since the access streets are in really bad conditions since the 1998 flooding.

On this particular site, it is necessary to say there was already a bridge, which collapsed in 1998, since it was badly designed and built. These people refuse to accept that their properties are built in a high-risk area, because they did not live in San Miguel during the 1998 catastrophe, that many of us suffered and still are suffering.

It is not fair that because of these people, students and residents of these neighborhoods are still lacking a direct and safe way of communication with centro, since they argue that such a bridge “would increase traffic, noise, people passing and crime.”

To our luck, most expats are working for the community’s benefit.
