Editor,
A week or two after moving to San Miguel last year at this time, a young, very presentable and well spoken young Mexican came to our door. He introduced himself, said he was a neighbor and had waved to us both on his way to and from school down the road several times.
He was in an embarrassing situation; his father was working in the States and wouldn’t be back for three days, and he needed his school fees before the next day. If we would lend it to him he could have it back to us as soon as his father came back to town. We gave him the money and got him to write down his name and address. We didn’t hear from him again and the address he gave us was not his.
This weekend another young man with an identical story, even down to the hand gestures, came to our door. We declined but felt saddened that we are being scammed by young people in such a way.

In memory of Therese Hethrington,
There are many people whom we allow into our lives, only to exit almost as quickly as they entered it. Just like a flower, their presence wilts away.
And then there are those whom we meet, and we just know that this will be a friendship forever.
Therese was one of those who arrived and stayed. This flower grew new
buds and new blossoms continuously. Even a short moment together would
be filled with sun, with her joy, her enthusiasm for life, for art and for poetry.
Therese leaves behind a huge empty space in our lives, but our love for her will live in our hearts forever. The times we shared will remain a special memory, unreplaceable.
May you rest in peace, Therese... until we meet again.
