FORUMS & LETTERS

Editor,

I’m sure I speak for most people in this town when I say that Jack Driscoll’s [December 19] letter was absolute pompous, pathetic RUBBISH!

These kind women were prepared to dress and be photographed in what might be considered “unbecoming” poses for CHARITY. Do you think they particularly WANTED to do it?

As a matter of fact, the two pictures in Atención were NOT in the least bit “pornographic.” Therefore, he must have taken himself to the show at El Market Bistro—so shocked and disgusted was he! And even of those, hardly one of them could be called “pornographic”! It was all in fun—and to raise money for a very good cause.

I have posted one calendar to my dear son-in-law in London!

Editor,

Dear Jack,

Thank you so much for your letter of concern to the editor. I agree with you as far as women being used by men as sex objects. However, I think you missed the point, which is that as women we are up against just that. Everywhere you look there are naked, or almost naked, women barely of age with plastic everything. As a result, many of us have acquired a negative body image. This is the reason our daughters are anorexic at eight years old and want silicon breasts for their sweet 16th birthdays. The beauty of this project is that it is by women, about women and about helping others. All of the women in this calendar are strong, independent, hard-working women. Many of us are mothers, some of us are grandmothers. The only man involved is Skip Williams, our photographer. Although he has lost most of his sight, he still maintains the best of his vision, in which he sees everyone of us as beautiful goddesses, and helps us to see the same. Working with Skip is a joint adventure, where both artist and subject work t
ogether. The results are photos that capture the very essence of our feminine spirit. After a photo session we leave with new self-confidence, self-esteem and self-love, and we are so happy to see ourselves so beautiful that we want to share it with the world. Jack, I hope you will reconsider and come see the show at El Market Bistro, and please do bring a women with you, as this event is dedicated to her and to all women. Maybe you’ll even buy a calendar, and help someone else to see.
