Editor,
San Miguel’s local botanical garden El Charco del Ingenio is a wonderful jewel of nature preserved for residents and visitors. However, this past spring we noticed an increase in the disregard for El Charco’s rules prohibiting dogs.
Apparently some people think they are communing with nature, yet are disrespectful to the preservation of nature. Would these same people go to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, Vancouver’s Stanley Park, the Huntington Botanical Garden, the New York Botanical Garden or the Toronto Botanical Garden, and let their dogs play in the Koi Ponds? In San Miguel some feel they have the right to do this to our very own beautiful botanical garden.
We know there are limits to El Charco’s ability to enforce its policies regarding dogs, but should they have to constantly police visitors? We believe not. Visitors, members and non-members alike should learn the policies and follow them. To not follow the rules is disrespectful to El Charco and its attempts to protect a small piece of nature. Please let all of us, as well as the valuable wildlife, continue to enjoy El Charco del Ingenio.

Editor,
Thanks to all who made the 30th anniversary of the San Miguel chapter of International PEN on Saturday, July 18, 2009, such a memorable occasion. The event began with a showing by David Lebrun of his film, Breaking the Maya Code, which held the viewers spellbound with the archeological detective story it told and generated brisk sales of the video afterwards. After the film, many people joined us in the Bellas Artes patio for reminisces of the thirty years past and reconnections of PEN folk, old and new. Writers came from León, Salvatierra and PEN chapters in Mexico City and Guadalajara to help us celebrate. We shared tamales, wine, jamaica and a gargantuan birthday cake shaped like a book.
We are especially grateful to the staff of Bellas Artes; Sharon Steeber de Orozco and her husband, Salvador; Bill Pearlman; Pat Perrin, Wim Coleman and their daughter Monse; Eva Hunter; María and Teresa Morales; Arcadio and Elvia Ramírez; Víctor Sahuatoba; Lucina Kathmann and Pat Hirschl for making this such a happy event.
