FORUMS & LETTERS
Editor,
We in Midday Rotary have supported many fine community activities over the last
three years. Almost US$200,000 worth of community funding have been brought in directly through our club’s efforts. We are proud of that accomplishment and stand ready to do much more.
Unfortunately, there are severe restrictions on the use of our funding. Matching funds cannot be used for salaries or rent. Therefore, when faced with the challenge of helping keep a very special school open, we need to call upon our many community friends for help.
I am referring to IREE, the little-known School for the Deaf (on Pila Seca) that now serves more than 40 deaf children. Cecilia Escobar and her staff have been quietly running that school for almost 15 years. However, the private US donations to the school have dried up, and those children are in danger of losing their only hope for an education.
Won’t you help? Their special film series, “Breaking through the Silence,” begins next Tuesday, November 4, at the Teatro Santa Ana, and every seat should be filled for the nine film showings. Private donations to the school can be made by contacting Holly Yasui at hollyyasui@yahoo.com.
Remember: receiving an equal education is the best holiday gift these wonderful children can receive. Thank you.
