Letters to the Editor
Editor,
As property owners in the Palmita de Landeta area, we are very concerned about the proposed construction of a slaughterhouse bordering the protected area of El Charco and the road to Rodriguez. My family understands that all precautions will be taken to prevent contamination of the nearby streams, but unfortunately accidents can and do happen and we fear that all of the hard work being done by the staff and volunteers at El Charco to preserve the ecology of the wetlands may be endangered. In addition, the idea of having to drive past a slaughterhouse every time we leave our home to come in to el centro is deeply disconcerting. As I child I lived almost three miles away from a slaughterhouse and I shall never forget the pungent scent of death when the winds blew a certain direction. We sincerely hope that you will reconsider this decision and relocate the facility to an area that will create less impact on the land, its wildlife and its human residents. El Charco is a jewel in the crown of San Miguel, please r
econsider.

Editor,
With San Miguel’s cultural, environmental and social integrity at a crossroads we the humble residents of San Miguel, accept with gratitude, Ambassador, Dr. Alberto Szekely’s noble presence. His offer to provide his professional services to our community is a godsend.
San Miguel is plummeting into the uncharted waters of uncontrolled development. The resulting flagrant and foul abuses to our precious environment and its diminishing natural resources are indeed a threat to all who live here.
Rich or poor, Mexican or foreigner all must be held accountable for their actions. No exceptions! Many of the speculators care not for what is left behind for our children. We indeed care! We will seek to protect this precious city from the actions of those who are insensitive to the history and sustainable development of San Miguel.
The residents must embrace and support the arrival of a man whose steadfast record speaks for itself.
Dr. Szekely is part of a large citizen’s group who will help fight to conserve the integrity of our home, San Miguel de Allende.
Viva… San Miguel !
