Letters (Mar 3, 2006)
Editor,
When I read the letter in Atención on February 17 by Jorge Coro, I wanted to stand up and cheer! He expressed beautifully the thoughts of many of us in San Miguel, both Mexican and foreign.
Anyone in government power should read this letter by Jorge Coro. They should all heed this very wise and concerned Mexican citizen. He fully realizes how this "Magic Town" can be destroyed.
I have never met Jorge Coro. However, I wish he could contact me. Something in addition to his wonderful letter in Atención should be organized before it is too late.
Many, many thanks, Sr. Coro, for your wise concern and how you expressed it for "our" Magic Town.

Editor,
In a recent letter (February 17), a writer bemoans the arrival of a new Comercial Mexicana grocery at the Celaya entrance to San Miguel. I guess he must be apoplectic, with the announcement of a much larger complex, anchored by a new, much larger Mega-Gigante grocery, at the Querétaro entrance to our town. Clearly, he would not prefer them to be in the middle of town, as is Guanajuato's Comercial
Mexicana.
He says, "I'm not against Comercial Mexicana ...," but also asks, "What happens to the children who ... associate a pelican with a supermarket?"
Obviously he's unhappy with modern promotion, per se, as well as the large-scale development that is proceeding apace. He would like to see fewer logos as well as more authentic development of our historic town, not "mediocre" stones replacing old stones, not "synthetic paint" slopped on the passing of time.
I agree. Things have gotten out of hand.
Let's get the city to ban all advertising; prohibit television, phones and computers; require construction to proceed without power tools or modern scaffolds; close the hospitals and internet cafés; replace the cabs with donkey carts; prohibit the delivery and sale of any factory packed product; and, of course, mandate the removal from every building of indoor flush toilets.
That'll do it (for a start)!

Editor,
I would like to thank the editor and staff of Atención for all your help in promoting the Cactus and Champagne Benefit for El Charco Botanical Garden on Sunday, February 19.
Over 150 people showed up at the garden and enjoyed a beautiful day in a natural setting with good food and entertainment provided by Patsy Dubois and Bobby Kaplan.
Beautiful models in their many spring outfits from Barbara Porter's Boutique were a big hit for the crowd.
It was a real treat to have the community turn out to support our beautiful gardens and have such a good time doing it.
Over 120,000 pesos were raised toward the tree planting and new administration offices. Thanks to all for their help.
-Bob Haas, Charco board
Editor,
As the biographer of Leonard Brooks, I am surprised that no mention was made of him by Pedro Friedeberg in the article on Carmen Masip that Atención carried last issue. Leonard was the founding director of Bellas Artes' music department and ran it for 25 years. Some of Mexico's top musicians credit Leonard for their successful careers. As internationally known cellist Gilberto Munguía told me, "When he arrived in San Miguel, it was a sleepy little town where magic was about to happen. Leonard brought the music."
