Films focus on hot topics
By Cliff DuRand

This week the Center for Global Justice will bring two films that focus on two of the most pressing issues in the US today: the war in Afghanistan and health insurance reform.

Earlier this month activist filmmaker Robert Greenwald launched his challenge to Rethink Afghanistan. After eight years of war and no end in sight, why is the US there at all? And who is the enemy? In this advocacy documentary, Greenwald hits all the key issues surrounding the war.

The Center also will screen the 2002 thriller John Q. Denzel Washington stars in this drama as fresh as today’s headlines from the health reform debate. He plays John Quincy Archibald, whose son Michael collapses as a result of heart failure. John rushes Michael to a hospital emergency room, where he is informed that Michael’s only hope is a transplant. Unfortunately, John’s insurance won’t cover the procedure. Out of options, he takes the emergency room staff and patients hostage until hospital doctors agree to do the transplant.

Discussions will follow the presentation of each of these films.
