The Cave of the Yellow Dog

Not for restless, impatient viewers, this movie can be appreciated by those fascinated by beautiful remote locations, heartwarming relationships between a rosy-cheeked child and an animal, and culture in general. I love minimalism in movies, especially ones that occur in countryside. The “actors” are real individuals who live a life of simplicity and are just doing on screen what comes naturally. The director, Byambasuren Davaa, (Story of the Weeping Camel) seizes each day to show the drama and ingenuity in a loving family’s life. From wolf howl beginning to ironic ending you’ll be delighted. The Cave of the Yellow Dog is a work of art, it echoes the pioneer past, like the use of dried buffalo dung for fuel. The Nomads’ Yurt home is a gem within and its dismantling at summer’s end is fascinating.
