José Luis’s Pick and Tips
The pick: My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies
This film will be one of your favorites. Not only are the performances enthusiastic and inspired, but the sound quality and picture are excellent. Julie Andrews is the nominal host. The movie is just one great song after the other. If you love Broadway music, you will love this one. I think the performances of Lea DeLaria, Andrea McCardle and, particularly, Linda Eder are the best, but they are all top-notch. Some of the other featured performers include Karen Ziemba and Bebe Neuwirth, Audra McDonald, Judy Kuhn, Mari Mazzie, Dee Hoty and Elaine Stritch.
The tips
In order to be able to provide the best viewing experience, the show times for some movies may be adjusted to accommodate their length. Be sure to check the schedule carefully. Also, please remember the new ticket price of 50 pesos. Discount cards are 400 pesos for 10 shows.
On Monday after 4pm buy your tickets for any selection of the week. Don't take the risk of being locked out! Nos vemos en el Cine….
My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies (1999)
Tuesday, December 12, noon
(Library will be closed. Please enter side door, Reloj 50A.)
Wednesday, December 13, 5pm
English, 100 minutes
Director: Paul Gemignani
On September 28, 1998, some of the greatest divas in musical theater took the stage at New York City's Carnegie Hall to belt out a selection of the hits that made them famous. Among the evening's showstoppers are Liza Minnelli performing "Some People" (from Gypsy); Andrea McArdle singing "Look for the Silver Lining" and "Tomorrow" (from Annie) and Bebe Neuwirth and Karen Ziemba teaming up for "Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag" (from Chicago).
V-Day: Until the Violence Stops (2003)

(Library will be closed. Please enter side door, Reloj 50 A.)
English, 73 minutes
Director: Abby Epstein
Cast: Eve Ensler, Tantoo Cardinal, Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Isabella Rossellini
This documentary follows the grassroots impact of the V-Day movement, whose goal is to end violence against women, in five international communities while exposing the pervasive and cultural forms of violence that women experience all over the world. It's an alternately devastating and hopeful film that features Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Rosie Perez and Isabella Rosellini.
Crimson Gold (Talaye Sorgh, 2004)
Wednesday, December 13, 3pm
Thursday, December 14, 4pm
Farsi with English subtitles, 97 minutes
Director: Jafar Panahi
Cast: Hossain Emadeddin, Kamyar Sheisi, Shahram Vaziri, Azita Rayeji.
When Hussein (Hossain Emadeddin) finds a receipt for a necklace in a stolen purse, he's flabbergasted by the large sum of money. He knows that his miniscule salary will never be enough to afford such luxury. What's more, he's sick of the hypocrisy of a social system that makes people like him (on the lower rungs) feel like an outcast. But all that is about to change—at least for one night.
