José Luis’s Pick and Tips

The pick:

The Education of Shelby Knox

This documentary tells us a lot about what makes so much of the USA so clueless in its approach to sex. It focuses on a teenage crusader who faces the facts that Lubbock has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and that this is in part due to the misleading "sex ed" that takes place in the schools, teaching that implies that condoms are so faulty that if you are going to have sex you might as well do it without protection. Using the Bible as a means to prevent too much rational thinking or empathic feeling, many Lubbockers seem to act in a way well designed to make any independent spirits move out as soon as possible. What influenced this heroine to become so clear and courageous in such a benighted and fear-ridden town? The film shows her parents to be sometimes wonderfully supportive, though naturally often scared.
