Julio Alemán, a total actor

The face of Julio Alemán has been present in all the film genres, in theater, television and even politics in Mexico.
Julio Alemán Méndez was born in Morelia on November 29 of 1933. From a large family, son of a banker, he studied Textile Engineering and Agronomy, although in his heart the restlessness of being an actor was always present. Finally, the opportunity arrived and he decided to take advantage of it in spite of not having all the support.

He began his career in theater at 21 years of age. In the year of 1957 he started working in the cinema with the film “El Zarco,” appearing in movies year after year. The definitive consolidation of his career comes in the 60s when participating in diverse important films. Among his most outstanding projects are “Los Jóvenes” (The Young People) and “Amor y Sexo” (Love and Sex), considered a cult Mexican film in which he had the pride of sharing credits with Mexican’s famous actress María Felix.

His film “Los Hermanos del Hierro”, (The Brothers of Iron), directed by Ismael Rodriguez, is one of his most important works, and is considered by critics as the emblematic western of the Mexican cinema history. Julio Alemán kept in constant activity, doing at least one film a year in the following decades. These works include “Las Pirañas Aman en Cuaresma,” “Patsy, mi Amor” and “El Tunco Maclovio.”

His work is not restricted to the big screen. His career comprised more than 30 plays, and he made history when participating in the first Mexican soap opera: “Senda Prohibida” in 1957. Since then he had the opportunity to work uninterruptedly in different soap operas that, to date, have brought him great satisfaction. His devotion to work, he claims, has been worth more to him than the 130 awards he received at national and international levels.

The Expresión en Corto Short Film Festival will pay Alemán homage with a parade through the main streets of the city and in the Ángela Peralta Theater this Saturday, 22, at 8pm.

Pedro Vargas’ The Littlest Outlaw

In December 1953, Walt Disney produced a film in San Miguel de Allende, The Littlest Outlaw, in which Pedro Vargas played a priest from the Parroquia who helped a boy and his horse that were running away from a villainous army colonel, portrayed by Mexican actor Pedro Armendáriz.

According to Vargas’s son Marcelo, Walt Disney was personally supervising the film’s production in San Miguel, and he spent several evenings at Pedro’s house talking about how he created his characters and his forthcoming project of Disneyland.

The city of San Miguel Allende and its bullring provide the colorful backdrop to this Walt Disney 1950’s classic tale of a boy and a horse called “The Littlest Outlaw.”

The story of a 10-year-old Mexican boy whose attachment to a thoroughbred jumping horse is so strong that he “steals” the animal and runs away with it when its owner orders it shot. A series of adventures follows—with a pair of comedy bandits in a deserted town, with a group of village people during a festival and with a gentle village priest (famed San Miguel singer the late Pedro Vargas).

Eventually, the horse escapes the boy when frightened on a bull-breeding farm, and the boy and the priest finds it later as a picador's horse in the bull ring at San Miguel. During a critical moment in a bullfight the horse throws its rider, whereupon the boy jumps into the ring, mounts the animal and—well, you can take it from there.

The Expresión en Corto Short Film Festival will pay Vargas homage in the Jardín this Sunday July 23, at 9:30pm.

Santo vs. Las Momias de Guanajuato

Considered a cult film and starred by one of Mexico’s most important superheroes, Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata.
In a visit to the museum of the Momias of Guanajuato, the guide advises the tourists about a curse of a fighter called Satán, denounced by El Santo’s grandfather a long time ago.

Satán swore to take revenge ten years later, and that is the date. The mummies are resurrected headed by Satán, who wants to eliminate all people who are close to El Santo. Other fighters, Blue Demon and Mil Máscaras, help El Santo fight against Satan and the mummies.
