An introduction to organic farming
By Rick Wendling

Two local organic farms are partnering to bring an exciting workshop on organic farming to San Miguel.

Las Glorias del Huerto and Vía Orgánica, both located near Atotonilco, are sponsoring a one-day intensive overview of organic farming techniques with a hands-on workshop. The lead instructor, Jesús Ignacio Simón Zamora, is a respected environmental consultant from Michoacán who has taught courses throughout Mexico. Luis Suárez of Las Glorias del Huerto and Luc Monzies of Vía Orgánica also share their expertise.

The workshop aims to introduce local growers to organic methods that nourish the soil and produce healthy, high value produce. It is being offered free of charge to campesinos, small-scale farmers and agricultural co-ops. Through this event Luis and Luc hope to persuade local farmers to begin to use these techniques on their own land. Members of the public are also invited to attend and are asked to make a donation of 200 pesos to help defer the cost of the program.

The workshop takes place at the Vía Orgánica conference center and farm near Atotonilco. The attendance fee includes an organic lunch from Comida D’Alicia, prepared using products from Vía Orgánica’s farm and store. The program is conducted in Spanish with a one hour recap and Q&A session in English at the end of the day. Transportation to the farm for a limited number of people is available from the Vía Orgánica store.

To register for the workshop, visit the Vía Orgánica Store at Margarito Ledezma #2 in Colonia Guadalupe between 9am and 9pm Monday through Saturday. The registration deadline is August 5. If you need transportation, please make arrangements when you register.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leading organic farming experts in Mexico
