Junta flamenca presents its special show of breathtaking dance, passionate song, and virtuoso guitar every Friday afternoon at five, starting January 18, at the Santa Ana Theater in the Biblioteca Pública.

The term “flamenco” is an apparent contradiction—fiercely individual, but only having meaning within the spirit of the whole group. The special flavor of flamenco is highly personal to the interpreting artist. The result within the group comes from the collective feelings and the accumulated joys and melancholy affecting each member by the singer, the guitarist and the dancers.

When a song or a dance contains those extra qualities that enhance, it is said to have “aire” or breath. “Aire” is one of the calls shouted to the performer. With a magic quality, it transports the dancer in that battle with the body that gives meaning and energy to flamenco dances.

As a dancer, within my whole being, flamenco is an affirmation of my own ability in life to survive through the expressive richness that is flamenco.
