A flourish of flamenco
By Adriana Covarrubias Herrera (Mar 17, 2006)
The Compañía Ballet Español Proart of Querétaro was created to offer dancers professional development within the Centro Proart fine arts institution.
"Compás al Aire," the group's new show, promises a colorful evening of traditional and contemporary flamenco. Their wide repertoire also includes a variety of folk dances: caracoles, sevillanas, bulerías, soleá, tientos, tangos and martinete.
Artistic director Adalina Carvajal Fonts brings a wealth of experience to the group from her time as prima ballerina and founder of the Ballet Español de Cuba. The award-winning guitarist Josué Tacoronte Otero composes and interprets original and classical musical arrangements.
The young company is forming an impressive list of performances and has shared the stage with artists of international importance such as Joaquín Grilo, María Juncal, Ballet Español de Cuba and Isaac Hernández. They have also performed with important exponents of this art at a national level, including Patricia Linares and Paco Rentería.
The company performs regularly at fundraising functions for Querétaro organizations such as Casa de Cuna and Ciudad de los Niños, among others.
A fragment of the show will be performed as part of the national celebration of International Day of Dance on Saturday, April 29, in Mexico City.
