The Biblioteca Pública, the cultural center of San Miguel, kicks off La Independencia celebrations early with its Fiesta Mexicana on September 14.

The evening, now a tradition at the institution, is a Mexican party of music, dancing, games and more, which makes the most common phrase of welcome in Mexico ring true: Mi casa es tu casa (My house is your house). The Biblioteca doors are open and everyone is welcome!

Teatro Santa Ana director José Luis Mendoza will MC the event with his natural predisposition for drama and his irreverent but entertaining persona. The fiesta begins with a welcome shot of mescal which will get guests in the mood to join in the fun of one of Mexico’s most loved games—Lotería (Bingo)! The cryptic calls for the bingo cards are a great way to hone your colloquial Spanish skills, and if you are quick on the draw you might earn a prize.

Dancers and musicians highlight the evening. The mesmerizing Ballet Folklórico presents the colorful and celebratory dances of Mexico, keeping indigenous traditions alive in their dazzling performance. The Estudiantina is a small group of musicians offering a concert using musical instruments and costumes that reflect Spanish influence, but with songs and dances that reflect Mexican customs and style. Sergio Basurto will bring the strings and represent a strong tradition of western Mexico with his folklore harp performance. You may find yourself swept away by the Ballet Folklórico or caught in a reverie as you listen to the sweet sounds of Estudiantina and Basurto.

To round off this event of Mexican sensations, a delicious selection of typical botanas (snacks) will be offered, a cash bar will be on site with national drinks and raffles will be fun for everyone. All of this can be enjoyed on the cool stone patio of the lovely Biblioteca courtyard as the sun begins to set and the moon begins to rise.
