The wide smiles on the faces of the Hernández Trejo family told the entire story. Their new Casita Linda house, the first that they could truly call home, was being formally dedicated and singularly honored by the presence of San Miguel de Allende Mayor-Elect Luz Maria Núñez Flores.
Located in Ejido de Tirado, the home is the 27th to be constructed by Casita Linda in its mission to create a dignified, safe and empowering environment that will provide a foundation of hope for families living in extreme poverty. On October 1, ground was broken for house number 28.
The Hernández Trejo family includes father José Sergio Hernández, mother Sylvia Trejo Ramírez and children Diana Jasmin (9), Jennifer Berenice (7), José Sergio (4), Luis Alberto (2) and Enrique Alejandro (1).
The dedication on September 29, which celebrated the completion of the Hernández Trejo’s new home, included the presentation to the family of such basic household necessities as quilts (courtesy of San Miguel Quilters) and mattresses (courtesy of the St. Paul’s Mattress Project).
Speaking on behalf of Casita Linda, its co-founder and current president, Irma Rosado Soto, welcomed Mayor-Elect Núñez to the dedication. “Our Mayor-Elect is a social fighter and good friend of Casita Linda with great respect for this organization and the wonderful work it is doing for our community. We are pleased to have you join us for this most important occasion,” she said.
Responding to Rosado’s welcome, Núñez addressed the gathering of Casita Linda employees, their families, volunteers and special guests, including co-founder Jeffrey Brown, with words of praise for Casita Linda’s good works. “I am sure a lot of warmth and love will come to this house and I thank all of the volunteers and employees for showing their love of our community through these projects.”
Casita Linda is a Mexican nonprofit organization that builds adobe brick homes for families who are among the most disadvantaged in San Miguel and the surrounding areas in the state of Guanajuato.
