Christmas sale keeps kids in school

Mark your calendars and clear out your closets. The Biblioteca Pública’s annual Bodega de Sorpresas Christmas sale is the first Saturday in December! Shoppers get ready, and donors, give the Library a call if you have items to donate.

Savvy shoppers and bookworms know that the Bodega is the place to snare great bargains in contemporary literature from the hundreds of titles of used books on display, as well as surprising rare books that range from limited editions to signed copies and out of print treasures.

Among the racks of clothing and shoes, one can even find the occasional vintage treat as I did, just last week, as well as Brazilian leather pumps which now grace the feet of Editorial Assistant Mica. José Luis Mendoza, director of Culture and Arts at the Biblioteca is known for shopping there, his eclectic taste in fashion a clear statement of the treasures that are available for the rummaging. And here’s the tip: he donated a sweater and it’s part of the inventory for the Christmas sale, so watch out!

Although it promises to be a fun sale, the volunteers who run the Bodega are concerned as donations are trickling in and, quite frankly they need a lot more community support with doantions. So take a moment this week end to clear some space in your home and make room for a donation for the Bodega de Sopresas. It will make a difference.

The Biblioteca Pública, one of the largest and oldest of non-governmental organizations in San Miguel, is unique in that it operates several “social enterprises” to finance the institution and its many educational and cultural programs. Founded 55 years ago, the library has sponsored a Scholarship program ever since. In fact the program forms the very foundation of the organization’s mission—“to provide educational opportunities for Mexican children and youth.” Funding for the program comes from direct donations and the weekly Thursday sale of “pre-loved” books, clothes and household items.

More Sorpresas!

Lolita Perrusquía and Pilar Gómez give their lives deeper meaning by helping every Wednesday and Thursday at the Bodega de Sorpresas.

Lolita was invited to join the Biblioteca volunteers 19 years ago. “I closed a chapter of my very happy life in Mexico City and opened a new one in San Miguel. I consider this city like a piece of paradise on Earth.”

Besides her work at the Bodega, Lolita does volunteer work visiting the elderly twice a week.

Pilar Gómez has been a volunteer at the Bodega for 17 years. For her, the most rewarding goal she has achieved is in her work selling books, clothes and shoes to generate income to support the scholarships. “I am convinced that what our country needs for its social and economic development is to make education accessible for all Mexicans.”

A mother of two and grandmother of three, Pilar plans her activities each week without compromising the days she dedicates to the Biblioteca. “On Thursdays it doesn’t bother me to get up earlier; on the contrary, I do it with great pleasure.”
