Most women pass through biologically programmed stages of their existence: menstruation, first sexual intercourse, maternity and menopause. These experiences give distinctive shapes to their bodies. Yet the archetype (child, virgin, lover, mother or saint) that a woman may be living at the deepest level may not be congruent with her chronological age.
Women are able to make traslaciones to shift the pattern of their bodily manifestation and their identity in a manner analogous to planetary movements. The body is not only the container of one’s history, but rather it is the history of that person, the living image of the person’s incorporated belief system.
It possible to structure the body simply by means of unconscious messages. If the body shape is adopted due to a rigid pattern of beliefs, it is maintained unaltered, as if in a “frozen” state.
Until a woman embodies her own shape, she does not become personally present in her relationships with others, because she is living stereotypically and not self-reflectively.
Women can consciously and voluntarily choose when and where to actualize different aspects of their female potential. I can decide to act as my boyfriend’s mother when he is ill, or feel like my son’s lover during a conversation, experience my virginity at 40 years old and after several lovers; feel as if I’m in a girl’s body at a party, and acknowledge myself as a saint in the development of my profession. I choose.
Increasing your conscious participation in this process will help enlarge your capacities, expand your repertoire and achieve greater freedom and authenticity in your development as a competent and fulfilled person in the world.
Ana Luisa Martinez was trained in gestalt psychotherapy and polarity therapy. Her work integrates body reading and formative psychology. She has presented Traslaciones at numerous conferences and workshops throughout Mexico and has published an article on the subject.
