Oodles of doodles

By Christine Foster

Labradoodles, goldendoodles, cockerpoos, schnoodles and pekepoos. These designer mutts are getting pretty well known north of the border. Some are even becoming recognized breeds. Why? The appeal is partly that they shed less than the dogs they’re crossed with and partly that their temperaments tend to be a nice mixture as well: they’re lively but not frenetic, playful but not highly strung. And they are usually on the smaller side—perfect for the owner who wants something bigger than a purse dog but not as expensive to feed as a big breed.

And do we ever get these oh-so-desirable doodles at the SPA? You bet your noodle, we do. In fact there must have been quite a few active poodles and doodles breeding round this town for quite some time because we are often the recipient of the charmingly odd results. Would you believe a bassetootle, or a chiwawoo, a St. Berdoodle or a beagaloo? I think we’ve had them all. (At the shelter we call them “Fluffbuckets” if they are curly-haired and “scruffbuckets” if they have straighter hair.) These Disney-cute, bright–eyed, Benjy-sized beauties are often the quickest to be adopted. But once in a while, one with all the same great (um) pedigree and possibilities is overlooked and we don’t know why.

Toto is such a fine fluffy fellow. He is a bit goofy, we admit. And sometimes he barks, but this isn’t uncommon when you’re a canine in a cage hoping for a chin rub or even just one tiny second look from visitors. But he’s got all the right bloodlines for a dandy designer chum. He won’t shed much, isn’t too big, and heck, he’s cute as all get-out.

At the moment we’ve also got, well, not oodles, but a beautiful bouquet of kittens, which isn’t very common at this time of year. This will probably be one of the last litters before spring, so if you’re thinking of acquiring a little one, now is your chance. Bambu is a frisky fellow with the urge to scramble and pounce but just as happy to settle in for a bit of a cuddle.

So whether you’re looking for the perfect cat or fluffbucket, (sorry, doodle) or any other amazing canine or feline cocktail, we’ve got your next pet. Suggested donations for adoptions begin at 300 pesos, which includes sterilization and vaccinations.
