Pick of the Litter

What could be more adorable than an armload, a box load, or a bag full of puppies? We welcome them, squirming—all warm tongues and wiggling bums—as they arrive at the SPA and think, “Yes, we can help.” These at least won’t starve or be hit by cars. But our hearts grow heavy when a month later only two or three are adopted, and we have to watch the remaining littermates grow up “in care.” Waiting. Wondering. True, they get enough food, a good run every day and some kind attention—not a bad life, but no comparison to a loving home.

The dogs pictured here came to us as babes in arms. They had brothers and sisters who got picked. They didn’t. For some reason, nothing to do with them, their turn hasn’t yet come. Tippy and Skippy are both girls, well over a year old now.

They are sweet, bright and beautiful, with a good dose of handsome German Shepherd heritage. They are starting to bloom as dedicated volunteers offer them personal training but both are still shy, almost puzzled somehow. Surely they would shine if given the chance to romp, play and share life with the right person or family. They were born to love and be loved. Inside they are still the trusting, warm souls they were when they first arrived. They are eager to learn there’s more to this business of being a dog than waiting.

And what if you can’t adopt, but love to be around animals? Why not call the SPA at 152-6124 and ask about being a volunteer or even a mentor? Dogs like Skippy and Tippy become so much more adoptable when caring people spend one-on-one time with them and build their confidence.

If you can spare even an hour or two every week, you can enrich the lives of these animals and help them secure the futures they deserve. Feel the satisfaction of helping us find them forever homes. We’ve placed 120 dogs and pups so far this year. Maybe Skippy and Tippy’s turns are next!

Please come and visit these and all our other great animals at the Sociedad Protectora de Animales, open from 11am–2pm, Monday through Friday for adoptions and volunteers. A donation of 250 pesos for cats and 300 pesos for dogs is requested for adoption, which includes sterilization. We are located at Los Pinos #7, a right turn off Calzada de la Estacion. Visit www.spasanmiguel.org to learn more about us and about how to donate, sponsor or adopt an animal.
