The Golden Girls
By Mauri Formigoni, March 9, 2007

We have two roly-poly golden puppy sisters, 11 weeks old, all pretty and sweet and proud. Cheddar and Cheshire appear to have some Golden Retriever in them, but are mixed with another mystery breed; they have been at the SPA for three weeks.

They do not need to be adopted together, but the sisters like each other, look pretty together, and keep each other company. We had them at the Jardín last week with Lucky, who was adopted, and I was so proud of our animals. They were attractive, healthy, groomed, well-behaved, and responsive. The Jardín is fun for all of us. Our animals are in good health, clean, and excited to be on an adventure and getting so much attention. We could use more help with the animals there. It is a good volunteer job, important for public relations and for the animals and the possibility of adoption is at its highest when the dogs and cats are in the public eye. There is no pay, but you will get points in Pet Heaven.

Who is your sweetest, most likely to be adopted cat? Why Pegotty, of course! A young, long-haired, tiger girl with soft grey, black and white fur, she is less than one year old. Her coat keeps growing as she grows and she will be magnificent. People just want to pet her, and, because she is amenable, her beauty is an added benefit. We were asked the above question several weeks ago, and the family adopted another cat, less likely to be adopted. But we have the girl, herself! Come visit her and she will be your favorite, too.

We are happy to have good volunteers, but there are never enough, so please consider yourself invited. We are again painting the exterior, so it will be bright and graffiti-free.

Also we are looking for sponsors who chose one animal to pay a little extra for things we otherwise cannot buy, a collar, special food, a leash, or toys, and spend more time getting to know a special cat or dog who will feel someone cares.

Depression is real in animal shelters as animals don’t understand why they are caged and alone. One person can make a difference and a livelier, happier animal has a better chance of being adopted.

Our website is: www.spasanmiguel.org.  Check to see who is new and who has been adopted. It is nice to see the population changing. Our adoption rate this year is good. Some of our good ‘ol boys and girls have found rancho homes and Lucky is going to the States. It is worth the effort. Please consider coming by the shelter or join us on Thursdays for the Jardín visits. The Sociedad Protectora de Animales is on Los Pinos 7 just off Calzada de la Estacion. Our hours are Monday through Friday, 10–2pm for the clinic and noon–2pm for visitors and volunteers. Surgical hours are 10am–noon. Call for an appointment at 152-6124 or come to volunteer or visit the animals, Mon–Fri, noon–2pm.
