Worth the wait
By Mauri Formigoni, February 23, 2007

You’ve heard about the famous waiting list. When we are full, prospective clients are asked to hold their animals until we have a cage available. Well, one small dog waited and waited with his owners to become part of the Sociedad Protectora de Animales until we finally had room, and he was worth the wait.

He looks like Benjy from the movies though he will be groomed tomorrow and will dazzle your eyes. Bundles of curls hang over his face and body and you can see he is a kisser and ready to go. Recently neutered, he is frisky, healthy and active but not too animated to be a good pet. He is eager to find a new home after being given up by a family who could not keep him. He is funny, mugs for attention, rolls on his back and is a happy boy who wants an owner of his very own to keep him forever. Don’t we all? I believe you should know whatever problems we have encountered with the animals we offer you, but in his case we have not encountered any. We can’t say if he is house broken, but he did live with a family
before so it is possible but unknown. He’s a young adult, cuddly and cute, and we don’t get many small dogs who are fully grown. If you have an interest, please come down quickly because dogs like Benjy don’t stay here very long.

We recently were given a small, very young litter of three black kittens that are being raised by volunteer Rosalie Gower at home until they can eat and manage on their own and are returned to the SPA.

Rosalie carries them in a basket with her all day long, so she can keep them fed. They are growing quickly, and are as affectionate and spoiled as only babies can be. They are about two weeks old and will need to stay with their “mother” for about another month (or two weeks after you read this article). If you have an interest in a young male or female black kitten carefully hand raised, given shots as needed, and in good health, please call us at 152-6124 and leave your name and email address or phone number. We will contact you when they are available.

Volunteers for handling, playing, walking dogs or fostering babies in their homes are always in demand. It may involve only an hour or two a week for playing or walking or 24 hours a day of concern and hand feeding for several weeks before you turn them over for adoption, but it is certainly a pleasure. Each of us who have done it will do it again when we can. There are always too many dogs and cats for one small, beautiful Mexican town! Please help if you can, if not with your time and sweat, then perhaps with a donation for medicine, grooming or food. Our thanks to all who have offered to help in the past and to all our current volunteers who continue giving.

Check our website at www.spasanmiguel.org for photos of animals that are currently awaiting adoption or stop by the Jardín from 11:15am–1:15pm to see the new animals that are waiting to meet you. Please remember to join us or renew as a member for 2007 at the cost of 350 pesos or US$35 per person. You can help us as we grow and become part of an animal shelter which saves and heals dogs and cats. Call me at home with any questions, 154-5930 or email me at mauriformigoni@yahoo.com
