From the SPA

Everydog!
I have always been taken by the big, bad boys who come to the SPA, seem a bit scary, and wait, under observation, to see whether we can find homes for them. I never was drawn to the cute, bouncy fluff buckets that are quickly adopted—and always will be.

But Toby has a sort of mesmerizing rhythm to his bouncing, and he is very sweet and certainly easier to handle than the big guys. A probable poodle, Toby is about a year old and was recently surrendered along with his sister, who has already found a home.

At the SPA we again have an embarrassment of riches: lots of cats and dogs. All deserve a fair chance in the world. All are hoping for peace and food each day and shelter in exchange for affection and protection. And there is always more to learn about them when you take them home. You will need to provide a private sleeping area and a bed or blankets. Clean food and fresh water each day, and a ball or toys to play with. Your new family member will be vaccinated when you pick him up and probably be recovering from neutering. He’ll just need some quiet and time to heal and get to know you.
New animals give such pleasure, as do your older ones. Review your pet family and see whether you have time and space for any new animals. If you cannot take them home, you can foster a cat or a dog for 150 to 200 pesos a month for extra care. This support is terrific as a backup for new animals and is a way of ensuring they receive the time and care they need to grow up healthy while waiting for just the right family.
| Black and white cats are striking—none more than Abril, who looks recently painted. A young adult female, she is fashionably adorned in black and white fur, and she will decorate your life. Quietly fitting where there is space and room, cats are easy pets.

They are not as demanding as dogs but are amusing and clever, always aware of subtle changes in the home and in their owners. I’ve never regretted adopting a cat, even the kind that were being “observed.” Simply more riches, I think.
San Miguel is a great animal lover’s town. We always need kind people to help with these animals. Are you interested in grooming or working hands-on? There are never enough hands here at the SPA....
If you would like to consider volunteering, stop by the Sociedad Protectora de Animales on Los Pinos 7 just off Canal before the bus station, Monday through Friday from noon to 2 pm, and meet our animals. We need your help in any way possible. Or stop by the Jardín on Thursdays between 11:15am and 1:15pm to say “hello” and make a small donation. Our continuing thanks to Ron at the Bagel Café for storing our tables and signs. Check our website at

to see all our residents, including new arrivals.
