We are more gifted than we know
By Joseph Bennett
The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, by Julia Cameron and Mark Bryon, is a transformational book that has helped millions seeking a deeper connection to their creative selves. Through daily writing practice, artist’s dates, weekly gatherings and a wealth of empowering activities, The Artist’s Way fosters creative discovery, recovery and a deeper understanding of your own artistic process.
“My books are not creative theory,” Cameron explains. “They spring straight out of my own creative practice. In a sense, I am the floor sample of my own tool kit. When we are unblocked, we can have remarkable and diverse adventures. Most of us have no idea of our real creative height…we are much more gifted than we know. My tools help nurture those gifts.”
Beginning October 6 (and running for 12 consecutive Tuesdays), The Artist’s Way will be facilitated in the home of local assemblage artist, interior designer and life coach Joseph Bennett, MBA, CHT. After a decade of working in mental health as a psychiatric social worker, Bennett began discovering his own creative abilities and facilitated the work of The Artist’s Way in his home in San Diego, CA.
“The book changed my life, almost from the first page,” says Bennett. “I had spent years as a shadow artist (a term coined by Cameron to describe those not yet creating, “shadowing” other artists instead), and all of my friends and primary relationships were with artists. Just walking into their studios made my heart skip a beat!”
Bennett credits the work of Cameron, Bryon and his own life coach Leslie Jetter with helping him to reclaim his creative spirit. For the past 10 years, he has been making and exhibiting his art internationally, curating shows, teaching and supporting others to connect to their higher calling. “Cameron teaches us that ‘Art is made in Action,’ and by gathering together on a weekly basis, we expand our creativity in ways we hadn’t even imagined,” says Bennett.
You are welcome to expand your own creativity and have fun in the process, by joining him for weekly gatherings in his home. Group size is limited and a deposit is required to reserve your place. All are welcome!

Tapping the power of the internet

Winton Churchill
As a holistic practitioner, I developed a series of therapies that, when used together, can be very effective in treating problems that don’t respond to other single forms of therapy. I was struggling to put together my “brand” with the near-term plan to write a book about my life’s work.
Through a chance meeting at a friend’s house, I ran into an “E-marketing” expert who seemed quite knowledgeable in how to develop just the model I was looking for. Winton Churchill (actually a distant cousin of Winston’s) and his wife, Dr. Debi Yohn, have a company called Barefoot Consultants.
They essentially help Baby Boomers turn their life skills and experience into products and services that can be marketed not only through traditional means, but also by taking advantage of the social networks, email marketing, Twitter and other technologies the internet offers.
Winton had his own bestseller last year called Email Marketing for Complex Sales Cycles. He used various techniques and approaches (his trademarked Churchill Method) to drive the sale of his book to bestseller status.
As a result, other authors approached him and asked for his help. Now he works with a select group of writers and authors who are developing their future bestsellers.
I began to work with Winton myself, and we put together a top-level plan for not just a book, but also a series of products and services that would help others learn and apply the principles in my book. I would call this a comprehensive publishing plan!
I was shocked to realize many of the things I was doing would actually hinder the possibility of my book reaching its largest audience (and also severely limit my potential earning over the life of the book).
I learned how important certain key words for your book to be more easily found on internet search engines like Google. The advantage of pre-selling the book to certain groups before its release was another eye-opening idea.
Winton Churchill is in San Miguel this week and presents “Seven Critical Mistakes Authors Make When They Write Their Book That Undermine Their Sales and Doom Their Efforts to the Remainder Rack… And How You Can Avoid Them.” After the presentation he will be available to talk individually with those in attendance. The San Miguel Literary Sala sponsors this event, which includes a wine reception.
