A palette for poetry
By Anthony S. Maulucci

This poetry writing workshop is designed for visual artists and others who would like to explore the practice of using verbal images and metaphors to turn a painting into a poem. Beginners are warmly welcome. Come with a favorite painting in mind, paper and your favorite pen or pencil.

Paintings often serve as inspirations for poetry; indeed, the energy for creating poems and paintings flows from the same source. After selecting a favorite painting, you could write a poem that describes this work of art or, perhaps, a poem that captures your reaction to it.

We will spend the first part of the workshop going over the fundamentals of poetry and put them to practice with a few playful exercises. Later, participants will work on writing their own poem, inspired by a painting. Bring the print of an image with you or take something from one of the art books in the library.

These exercises will stretch your imagination and help you see painting in a new way. The use of language will engage your emotions, open up unexpected channels in your mind and refresh your perspective.
