Victor Sahuatoba, writer and poet

The Authors’ Sala for September boasts two writers of poetry and prose with an international influence. AS is thrilled to present Fay Hart and Victor Sahuatoba for an evening which promises to stimulate discussion and literary appetites.

Irish-American poet Hart, recently writer-in-residence at Kerouac House, Orlando, will discuss the outcome of her three-month residency and read from her collection, Yard Sale. Mexican author, poet and essayist, Sahuatoba, will have his works translated and read by Laura Josephs.

Fay Hart was born in Macclesfield, England and raised in the backwoods of Indiana. At fourteen she moved to Florida with her family, where she dropped out of school and worked her way across America, recording her adventures in a series of pamphlets titled, Don’t Kiss Me, I’m Busy. She returned to the UK in 1977 to work as press officer for the seminal punk label, Stiff Records. While living in London, Fay collaborated with other artists combining poetry with film, photography and music. Her poems have been published in London Magazine, Rialto, The Spectator, Poetry Review, Dazed and Confused, the Guardian, the North, and Rain Dog. Her first full-length collection, Yard Sale, is in development with Faber and Faber. In 2005, Fay left London to travel by mail boat, train and bus around the Caribbean, Mexico and the United States. She has just completed three months as writer-in-residence at the Kerouac House, Orlando, using the time to work on her first novel, The Post Woman’s Underclothes.

Mexican writer Víctor Sahuatoba is an author of poetry, essay, drama and narrative. His book Cuaderno de San Miguel (San Miguel Notebook) is a bilingual edition translated by Holly Yasui and Lilia Trápaga. In his introduction Tony Cohan writes: “Sharp, distilled tales of tenderness, poetry, humor and passion. San Miguel in refractions: ‘Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird’ as Wallace Stevens had it. Here are fourteen.” An English translation of Víctor Sahuatoba's book will be read by Laura Josephs.

The mission of the San Miguel Authors’ Sala is to provide visibility, community and education for writers and readers in both English and Spanish. The Authors’ Sala presents works by agents, editors, poets and authors, plus readings and workshops for writers and aspiring writers. Look for books by local authors in a special section at La Tienda in the Biblioteca. For up-to-date information on coming events, visit www.sanmiguelauthors.com.
