Authors' Sala Special Series (May 19, 2006)

The San Miguel Authors' Sala presents a unique, diverse and exciting evening of readings. According to Susan Page, founder of the San Miguel Authors' Sala, San Miguel can no longer be known as only an "artists' community," as witnessed by Atención's recent Literary Supplement.
The depth and breadth of the offerings in the supplement was truly impressive. Equally impressive will be the offerings of the Authors Sala's first-ever "Works in Progress" evening. Presentations will include prose, poetry, memoirs and photographic works. Everyone is invited to come hear these local San Miguel writers and mingle with them at a reception.

Vicki Gundrum

After careers in book publishing (East Coast) and software development (West Coast), Gundrum lives full-time in San Miguel and is writing a play, Locked-Down Ink, and a column about books for Atención, where she also copyedits.
She will be reading a story about "living below a crystalmethamphetamine 'sketch pad,' the poor man's crack den."

Bassia Bar-Chai

Bar-Chai is a self-described "linguist, writer, actress, sometimes of merit, peeking around the corners of life." An accomplished linguist, she worked as a teacher and translator in Israel, Argentina and Mexico. She will read from her work about "meandering through the Mediterranean from whore to Hora, a slice of life that could choke a Rabbi!"

Teresa Shepro

Teresa Shepro is a San Miguel resident and contributes to Atención. She will read from her memoir in progress.

Nancy Hooper

Nancy Hooper is a creative writer and poet originally from New York. She will be reading from her untitled memoir in progress.

Michael Hager

Michael Hager is a short story writer currently working on expanding his writing talents in the area of mainstream novels. He will be reading from his poetry anthology Reckoning of the Heart, a collection of previously published work and more recent material written over the last few years while living here in San Miguel. The anthology is being published this summer. He will also read a short excerpt from a novel in progress, Maya's Journey.

Marcia Loy

Marcia Loy is a writer who moved to San Miguel from Chicago almost two years ago. She has published nonfiction pieces but is now writing fiction.
She will be reading from a novel she has recently completed called Depth of Field, about Sibyl Rattigan, an investigative reporter looking into charity fraud.

Sandy Baum

Sandy is a professional photographer whose photos hang in cities across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Baum has been a full-time resident of San Miguel since November 2004.
Baum's work is a photo book with text about San Miguel titled San Miguel Style. He will read from his book proposal and his introduction, and then show photos of San Miguel.

Mireille Grovier

Mireille Grovier is a freelance writer, fabric artist and German translator. She will read from her work in progress, which was inspired by the Book of Genesis, Chapters 45 and 46, and by Thomas Mann's epic Joseph und seine Brüder.
