Writers' works in progress

The San Miguel Authors' Sala presents a unique, diverse and exciting evening of readings. According to Susan Page, founder of the San Miguel Authors' Sala, San Miguel can no longer be known as only an "artists' community," as witnessed by Atención's recent Literary Supplement.

The depth and breadth of the offerings in the supplement were truly impressive. Equally impressive will be the offerings of the Authors' Sala's first-ever "Works in Progress" evening. Presentations will include prose, poetry, memoirs and photographic works. Everyone is invited to come hear these local San Miguel writers and mingle with them at a reception after their presentations:

Vicki Gundrum

After careers in book publishing (East Coast) and software development (West Coast), Gundrum lives full-time in San Miguel and is writing a play, Locked-Down Ink, and a column about books for Atención, where she also copyedits.

She will be reading a story about living below a crystal methamphetamine 'sketch pad,' the poor man's crack den.

Michael Hager

Hager is a short story writer currently working on expanding his writing talents in the area of mainstream novels. He will be reading from his poetry collection Reckoning of the Heart, which is being published this summer, and a short excerpt from a novel in progress, Maya's Journey.

Bassia Bar Chai

Bar Chai is a self-described "linguist, writer, actress, sometimes of merit, peeking around the corners of life." She will read from her work about "meandering through the Mediterranean from whore to Hora, a slice of life that could choke a Rabbi!"

Marcia Loy

Loy is a writer living in San Miguel de Allende. She will be reading a conversation from a novel between a young photographer who is trying to get a job at a large Chicago newspaper and the editor who would hire him.

Teresa Shepro

Shepro is a San Miguel resident and contributes to Atención. She will read from her memoir in progress.

Mireille Grovier

Grovier is a freelance writer, fabric artist and German translator. She is a native New Orleanean and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Newcomb College.

Sandy Baum

Baum is a professional photographer whose photos are hanging in cities across the US, Mexico and Canada. He has been a full-time resident of San Miguel since November 2004.

He will present from San Miguel Style, a book of photographs and text capturing San Miguel in all its fine color.

Nancy Hooper

Hooper is a creative writer and poet originally from New York. She will be reading from her untitled memoir in progress.
