Frequently we consider traditional painting as decorative images that harmonize with our spaces. We often don’t consider the genesis of the work itself.
For the first time, a body of paintings named “Puras Marías” is being displayed at the Flor Acosta Galería del Atelier.

Martha López Gallegos has created themes of everyday life, prevailing customs and reflections of identity that recurred to the painter.
López Gallegos says of her painting, “I present my work with pride in being Mexican, being a woman and recognizing my indigenous side. It is identity of my stock. Painting is a satisfaction; it is a challenge to mould social realities on a canvas. The theme of women is a universe for me. Women who are indigenous mothers especially generate tenderness for me.
“The indigenous mother, through her life, carries the creature on her back. I consider this union to be so intimate; now the women of the cities are not disposed to this link. This is an ancestral custom of our people, and if we are not mindful to rescue our traditions, we soon will lose them.
“I am filled with pride to be Mexican. I feel plenitude in the paintings that I have done since I present ethnic identity, contextualizing the mother dressed in the traditional custom in identifiably Mexican spaces.”
This exhibition is an opportunity to admire picturesque images that evoke in us memories of the Mexico that identifies us and that some of us grieve for.
