May and June are hot in San Miguel. Tourism is always down. Many sanmiguelenses head for the cool mountains or the breeze-cooled beaches. However, for residents and visitors still here during these dog days, Galería Izamal celebrates the solstice with a special summer show. As an added attraction, discounts will be offered on selected tagged works.

Two of San Miguel’s best-known (and most-collected) artists feature new work: Juan Ezcurdia and Marion Perlet. Ezcurdia’s wonderful and colorful, sly and whimsical creatures and humans are instantly recognizable. Perlet’s poetic fantasies—her matadors, her lovers, her rich banquets in medieval settings, her women with flowers or birds (or fish) on their heads—are equally prized by collectors.

In May, my wife and I, along with fellow artist Britt Zaist, traveled to the cool forested mountains of southwestern Jalisco. Three new landscapes are from that trip, as well as a new series of expressive figures rendered in oils on paper. Zaist offers sumptuous abstracts in ink and her Picasso-esque ink drawings of animals, which are well known in San Miguel.

Christian Calvillo continues to show his latest series of surrealist/environmental oils, which highlight his interest in demonstrating the influence of computers on our visual sense.

Steven Cary’s work in acrylics probes the nuances of the human face and figure.

David Nobbe is both an original jeweler and photographer of Mexican life, including the corrida de toros.

Jeweler Tim Schneider, the newest member of Galería Izamal, is currently in Germany and may have his work in place at the opening.

Only a block from the Jardín, Galería Izamal is located next to Teatro Ángela Peralta on Mesones. The gallery is open every day, 11am–3pm and 4–8pm.
